What happened

A significant chikungunya outbreak continues in France’s overseas department of Mayotte. As of June 2, 2025, Public Health France has reported 560 confirmed cases of the disease, with a persistent concentration in the municipalities of Mamoudzou, Pamandzi, and Dzaoudzi. Response measures to the outbreak have included a targeted vaccination campaign with Valneva SE’s IXCHIQ vaccine, the first approved single-dose vaccine for chikungunya. The US CDC recommends travellers to Mayotte take extra precautions, including vaccination. Pregnant women should also reconsider travel if they are near the delivery of the baby to prevent getting infected and transmitting the virus to the newborn.
According to the World Health Organization, this year has seen several chikungunya outbreaks on islands within and countries bordering the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The outbreak in Mayotte is the first one since 2005-2006 when the island experienced a massive chikungunya wave with almost 7000 cases. In addition to chikungunya, local health authorities must also deal with dengue which has been gradually spreading on the island. Since the beginning of 2025, there have been 21 confirmed cases.
