A chlorine leak transpired at a swimming pool located within a private sports facility in Rome, resulting in the chemical poisoning of five children due to extended contact with the substance that had entered the water. The children purportedly experienced adverse health effects after swimming in the pool. One of the affected children, a nine-year-old, is currently receiving intensive care at the Policlinico Umberto I in Rome and is in serious condition. Two children have been released from the emergency department, while two others remain hospitalized in the ward. Law enforcement authorities are currently conducting an inquiry into the event. Alessandro Miani, President of the Italian Society of Environmental Medicine (SIMA), has cautioned against the increasing prevalence of analogous incidents in Italy. He also noted the potential hazards associated with chemical products commonly employed for swimming pool disinfection, including sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, sulfuric acid, and trichloroisocyanuric acid, due to their highly corrosive nature.
