On Thursday, May 22, an IAEA team completed a long-term operational safety review of Krško Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Slovenia. The review mission was requested by the plant’s operator, the Nuklearna Elektrarna Krško (NEK), and lasted ten days. IAEA experts from several countries, including Canada and France, reviewed the plant’s preparedness, organization, and programmes for safe long-term operations. They also held in-depth discussions with staff from the facility and inspected the site. The team acknowledged the consistent safety measures taken by the operator and their alignment with IAEA safety standards. It also provided suggestions to further improve safety at the plant, including full documentation of ageing instrumentation and control systems. On its part, the plant management expressed determination to maintain the current level of preparedness and further cooperate with the IAEA to improve it.
Krško is Slovenia’s only reactor and started operations in 1983. Located 70 Km east of Ljubljana, it is equipped with one pressurized-water reactor and has a net electrical output of 700 Megawatt electric. In 2023, its operating license was extended to 2043.
