What happened

Mozambique’s health authorities are ready to start a massive vaccination campaign against cholera in four districts of Nampula province. The campaign will begin on Saturday (May 17) and aims to vaccinate 1.7 million people in five days. It will cover, until May 21, all people aged one year or over in the city of Nampula and in Murrupula, Angoche, and Larde. According to Geraldino Avalinho, the head of the Public Health department at the provincial health services of Nampula, over 1700 teams have been deployed in the districts in support of the campaign. Each team consists of a vaccinator, a recorder, and a mobilizer. Avalinho also said that vaccinations have been the last resort used to combat the spread of cholera, favored by significant levels of misinformation about the disease among the population.
A cholera outbreak was declared in Nampula province in October 2024, and since then, there have been more than three thousand cases and 39 deaths caused by the disease. Provincial health authorities recently announced the end of the cholera outbreak in Mogovolas, the first district affected by the emergency, but they also reported new cases in the districts of Nampula and Angoche.
