What happened

The remediation of an unauthorized open-air waste disposal site situated on agricultural land in the rural area of Seano, along the boundary of Prato and Carmignano in Tuscany, has been finalized. This site, which had been impounded, contained an estimated 170 tons of discarded materials. The waste included regulated and hazardous substances, specifically 80 tons of mixed construction and demolition debris, 56 tons of textile fiber refuse, 29 tons of plastic refuse, one ton of cement, as well as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), batteries, tires, gas cylinders, engine lubricants, and filters, and discarded paints and varnishes. The cleanup operation was executed through the cooperative efforts of the Investigative Unit of the Environmental, Agri-food, and Forestry Police of Prato (NIPAAF) of the Prato Carabinieri and the Environmental Police Operations Unit of the Prato Municipal Police. After soil analysis conducted by the Tuscan Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPAT) of Prato, the area was released from impoundment.
