What happened

Ukrainian health authorities have reported 33 hepatitis A cases in Kyiv. Most of them are children. According to the Center for Public Health, all infected individuals are receiving treatment at various hospitals in the capital. The outbreak started in one of the city districts, with initial reports of 15 cases. Later the Kyiv Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified over 200 people who had been in contact with the infected, confirming other 18 cases. An epidemiological investigation is ongoing to determine the causes of the outbreak. Water samples have been collected from schools, shelters, and two district water wells. However, initial laboratory tests have not found anything abnormal. Relevant government agencies have been informed about the outbreak and the investigation.

Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease that can cause mild to severe symptoms. It spreads through consumption of contaminated food or water and poor hygiene practices. The incubation period is typically two to four weeks. While most infected persons recover fully, there is always the risk of severe or even fatal complications. People who recover from the illness gain lifelong immunity.
