What happened

The most recent federal data, dated 9 May 2025, documented over 1,000 measles cases in the United States for the first time in five years. The media reported this, citing numbers provided by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which published data on 1,001 measles cases in 31 jurisdictions. The CDC’s figures do not include the latest Texas data, where measles has spread widely among the Mennonite population. The outbreak has spread to neighbouring states, including New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas. According to estimates provided by the CDC, 13% of people infected with the disease in 2025 have required hospitalization. Three fatalities have been confirmed: two female children in Texas and one adult in New Mexico. It was observed that all three subjects were not vaccinated. US experts have expressed concerns over the potential resurgence of endemic measles, following the disease’s declaration of eradication from the country approximately 25 years ago. Infectious disease specialists have stated that the estimates are conservative, as the actual number of cases could be significantly higher, as sick individuals avoid seeking medical care. According to US paediatricians and infectious disease experts, the ongoing measles outbreaks are primarily attributable to two factors. Firstly, there has been a lack of robust promotion of vaccination campaigns. Secondly, there has been parental resistance to pre-exposure prophylaxis, due to growing misinformation.
