What happened

The Department of Health of Andalusia, Spain, has reported 5 new measles infections, bringing the total number of cases in 2025 to 72. This figure includes 17 individuals who recently entered the country from Morocco. These cases are associated with 13 distinct outbreaks, of which 7 remain active. It is noteworthy that 6 outbreaks, specifically 4 in Malaga and 2 in Huelva, have been successfully controlled after affecting 22 individuals. Over one-third of the total cases have necessitated hospitalization. Approximately 26% of all cases reported in the region this year have been linked to Morocco, which is currently experiencing a significant resurgence of measles. Official data indicates that Morocco has recorded over 25,000 measles cases and 120 deaths since September 2023. Moroccan experts attribute the outbreak to decreasing vaccination rates. However, the Moroccan Ministry of Health has reported a fifth consecutive week of a 13% weekly reduction in measles cases. Health authorities in Andalusia are encouraging unvaccinated individuals, particularly children under one and adults between the ages of 15 and 70, to receive vaccination. A screening initiative is ongoing to identify unvaccinated individuals, especially among recent arrivals from regions with high measles prevalence.
