On Wednesday, May 7, Belford Hospital in Fort William was locked down after staff detected several cases of norovirus. No new patients can be admitted, and visitor numbers have been restricted. An NHS Highland spokesperson said that those who wish to visit patients at the hospital should contact staff if their visit is deemed essential. People with symptoms like diarrhoea or vomiting should avoid visiting a health and social care setting for at least 48 hours.
Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes various symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhoea. Although unpleasant, the infection generally goes away in two to three days. People who have or suspect to have norovirus should stay at home, drink lots of fluids, and get plenty of rest. They should avoid fruit juice or fizzy drinks, which worsen diarrhoea symptoms, and eat only when feeling able to. Paracetamol is advised to reduce discomfort.
