A medical emergency occurred in Valdagno, in the province of Vicenza, where 52 runners suffered gastrointestinal problems after taking part in a running event. Local health authorities have stated that the cause of the widespread discomfort is identified in some private drinking fountains, not connected to the municipal water supply, from which the participants in the race quenched their thirst. Following a significant number of visits to health facilities by users complaining of gastrointestinal symptoms, the procedure for reporting suspected food poisoning was activated. The territorially competent Public Health and Hygiene Service then began the necessary investigations. Samples from the drinking fountains have been identified as the probable origin of the poisoning, and the results of the laboratory tests are currently pending. The affected individuals received assistance and are currently recovering without needing hospitalisation. The mayor of Valdagno has ordered warning signs to be placed at the affected drinking fountains, which, sourced from natural water sources, could have been contaminated following the heavy rains that hit the area in the days leading up to the sporting event.
