What happened

The Italian environmental organization Legambiente has communicated to a prominent Italian television program the existence of 618,000 tons of waste material in the Tavoliere delle Puglie region, situated within the province of Foggia. Daniela Salzedo, the president of the aforementioned organization, has attributed the unlawful accumulation of waste to illicit activities connected with the criminal phenomenon commonly referred to as ‘eco-mafias,’ which are prevalent in the affected areas. Ms. Salzedo asserts that local organized crime elements are utilizing the territory as an unauthorized waste disposal site. To rectify this circumstance, Legambiente has submitted a proposition to designate the region as a Site of National Interest (SIN), thereby enabling enhanced oversight and increased attention from national authorities concerning the current state of environmental degradation.
