What happened

Local police sources have reported that an armed confrontation occurred in the Begukhel area of the Lakki Marwat district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) between militants and members of a local Peace Committee. This development followed the killing of an old man by militants, resulting in injuries to two of his relatives and neighbour. During the exchange of gunfire, militants utilised RPGs (Rocket-Propelled Grenades) and other heavy artillery. The committee members returned fire in an attempt to repel the attack, forcing the assailants to retreat. Law enforcement officials have initiated an investigation into the incident. The occurrence is indicative of the escalating presence of militants in Lakki Marwat, where there has been a marked increase in attacks in recent months, despite the ongoing efforts of local Peace Committees to resist the influence of terrorist organisations. The district of Lakki Marwat has historically been a significant centre of terrorist activities and violent unrest, with the first documented incidents of such behaviour in the early 2000s.
