According to sources cited by ANSA, the Spanish electricity grid operator (REE) has dismissed the hypothesis that the substantial blackout that occurred in Spain on April 28, 2025, was initiated by a cyber attack on its facilities. The system was deemed to be ‘stable’ in all variables and safe conditions until two losses of power generation were detected in a few seconds. The system could not absorb these losses, which resulted in a general blackout, as REE explained. During the press briefing, the spokesperson for the EU Commission, Paula Pinho, expressed relief at the news, although a full assessment of the incident’s causes is pending. Eva Hrncirova, the spokesperson responsible for energy issues, has provided reassurance by stating that all the necessary measures are being implemented to prevent future incidents of this kind.
