What happened

At a public event entitled ‘Sustainable nuclear: Italy restarts’, attended by institutional representatives, politicians, and experts, Sogin CEO Gian Luca Artizzu declared the company’s willingness to make the sites of the old power plants available for future new plants, following their dismantling. Sogin is responsible for the decommissioning of several nuclear power stations. One such power station is located in Latina, Borgo Sabotino, and was constructed in the early 1960s. However, it was subsequently halted in the aftermath of the 1987 referendum. As reported by local media outlets, the Latina plant was the final of four Italian nuclear power plants to receive the decommissioning decree, which was issued in 2020 by the Ministry of Economic Development.
