An 8-year-old girl has died in West Texas from complications related to measles. The unvaccinated girl, who had no underlying health conditions, was hospitalised and represents the third death in the United States caused by the measles outbreak this year, as confirmed by the U.S. Department of Health and U.S. Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The third victim was preceded by the death of a six-year-old girl from a local Mennonite community and a man in New Mexico. Both were unvaccinated. The virus has infected more than 600 people thus far, more than double the number of cases recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during the previous year. Most cases have been observed in individuals who have not received the vaccine. The state of Texas has been particularly badly affected, with more than 480 cases of measles recorded to date, leading to the spread of the outbreak to neighbouring states. To contain the outbreak, federal health authorities are collaborating with local officials, providing vaccines and other medications, and offering additional medical support services.
