What happened

The Italian Ministry of Health, via its portal dedicated to Safety Notices and Food Product Recalls, has issued a precautionary recall for a batch of pork salami from the market. This recall is due to a microbiological risk for consumers, as a possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes has been detected in the meat. The salami in question is produced by a company based in the Tuscan region, specifically in Colle di Val d’Elsa, Siena province, Italy. Although the implicated product has already been recalled from stores, consumers who have purchased the salami are advised not to consume it and to return it to the point of sale. Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a food poisoning that can manifest in milder clinical forms and spontaneous remission, such as acute febrile gastroenteritis, which appears within a few hours of ingesting contaminated food. In the most severe cases, however, the bacterium can cause meningitis, encephalitis, and severe septicemia.
